Project Overview 2024/2025

Students of the 2024/2025 cohort of the Managing Climate Solutions certificate aim to implement nine projects in the spring semester 2025. These initiatives contribute to shaping the future of the University of St.Gallen (HSG). Stay tuned to learn more about the various projects!

Climate Stripes Projection

The Climate Stripes Projection is a public art initiative in St. Gallen that uses the Switzerland-specific climate stripes to illuminate prominent buildings and raise awareness about climate change. This striking visual installation engages the local community by making the effects of global warming tangible. The projection was connected to the climate art exhibition vernissage of the University Art Commission at House Washington. By merging art and science in public space, the project encourages dialogue and reflection on the urgent need for climate action.

HSG Food for Tomorrow

Food systems are responsible for a third of global greenhouse gas emissions, further accelerating climate change. Transitioning to plant-based diets can drastically reduce the impact on the environment and climate. Our project‘s vision was to  transform the food culture at HSG by making climate-conscious  yet delicious  food options more accessible to everyone  on campus, empowering out community to reduce its climate impact through everyday choices. For this, we brought food trucks to the main building throughout the month of March, selling over 600 plant-based meals, creating many happy faces and collecting valuable data to influence the future of sustainable food at HSG.

Exchange on Tracks

Exchange on Tracks is a practical guide designed to help outgoing exchange students travel more sustainably. The booklet compares train and flight  options for all 19 European countries with partner universities, including travel times, CO₂ emissions, and cost considerations. It also features travel hacks, booking platforms, and personal tips to make low-carbon travel more accessible and attractive. Supported by a launch event, a social media campaign via @tripster_travel, and on-the-spot booking assistance, the project aims to raise awareness and offer tangible tools to reduce the university’s Scope 3 emissions related to student mobility.

Klimaweg St. Gallen

Together with a third-grade class from Engelwies School, we created an interactive Climate Solutions Trail for the city of St. Gallen. We believe that children deserve a voice in the climate conversation — they are the future, after all! During an exciting hands-on day at the SQUARE, the children explored local and practical solutions related to climate awareness, mobility, sustainable diets, energy efficiency, and circular consumption. Their creativity, curiosity, and enthusiasm shaped this one-of-a-kind experience. Curious to see how children perceive and explain complex sustainability topics? Visit the trail and discover climate solutions through their eyes!

Mission Zukunft

Mission Zukunft is an interactive roleplay game for 11th and 12th grade high school students that makes climate education tangible and engaging. Students take on different roles and negotiate investments, CO₂ emissions, and climate policies while navigating trade-offs between individual interests and societal goals. The game promotes creative thinking, raises awareness for climate justice, and encourages critical reflection on fossil fuels and sustainable alternatives. It shows how emissions can be reduced despite conflicting interests and highlights the role of policy and renewable energies. The game package includes a handbook, presentation slides, a calculation Excel tool, and supporting materials like role cards. Mission Zukunft is not only an educational tool for knowledge transfer, but also contributes to Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

Panel Discussion: 1.5° is here and now!

Originally inspired by the idea of installing a Climate Clock to visualize the urgency of climate action, we soon realized that the 1.5°C threshold had already been surpassed, prompting us to rethink its role in climate communication. This insight led to the development of our panel discussion “1.5°C is Here and Now,” where we explored how universities and businesses can communicate the climate crisis in ways that are scientifically sound, trustworthy, and engaging. The event brought together experts from academia, business, and policy to reflect on the evolving responsibilities and opportunities within the climate transition.

Solarize the Canton

This project maps the untapped solar potential of cantonal buildings in St. Gallen with a focus on heritage-protected sites. It builds on a 2024 regulatory reform that introduced a traffic light system, simplifying the permitting process for installing solar panels on protected buildings. By combining data analysis with stakeholder insights, the team developed an interactive mapping tool and a dual communication strategy targeting both policymakers and the wider public. The outcome provides a strong foundation for future MaCS cohorts to move from mapping to implementation.

«I spy with my little eye»

Despite Switzerland producing 76.3 TWh of energy annually, wind power remains underused, mainly due to aesthetic concerns. This project addressed that bias through a photographic exhibition featuring 26 images, one from each canton, highlighting structures considered more visually disruptive than wind turbines to spark dialogue around renewable energy acceptance. The exhibition was part of a climate-focused evening on March 29, 2025, at House Washington, organized in collaboration with Group 1 of the Climate Projection team and the HSG Art Commission. The event included an art tour led by Prof. em. Dr. Yvette Sánchez, followed by an apéro and a panel discussion with representatives from Energie Zukunft Schweiz, SwissEnergy, and the City of St. Gallen on the public acceptance of wind energy. The evening concluded with a climate projection onto St. Gallen’s clock building, offering a powerful visual reminder of the urgency of climate action.

Climate Education Initiative

Effective climate action begins with education. The Climate Education Initiative aims to close gaps in climate education in Switzerland, with a focus on the cantons of Solothurn, St. Gallen, and Basel-Stadt. By conducting interviews with stakeholders, including school principals, teachers, and policymakers, the project highlights the urgent need for systemic reform to better integrate and strengthen climate–related learning into the Swiss education system. Key outcomes included a feasibility study, a stakeholder mapping analysis, and a policy memo designed to guide future measures. Using a bottom-up approach, the initiative builds the foundation for transformative education, drawing inspiration from successful models such as the Swiss IT Education Initiative.
